Frequently Asked Questions about the "Do it Yourself" Interface

Q1) Where do I go to make my own changes?

A1) Go to the admin page. You will need a login name and password. This way of making changes is still experimental and you may encounter problems and that can be frustrating. If you're familiar with web forms, image editing, filenames and can usually figure things out when it comes to computers, then you should find this fairly easy and convenient. Otherwise you may be better off letting the webmaster do it. If you want to give it a try, send an e-mail to the webmaster and ask for your login name and password for the "Do it Yourself Feature".

Q2) It looks like we can use quote marks (such ", or ') - wasn't this forbidden? What is happening?

A2) You're right - that problem was finally fixed but it's possible that some letters or symbols may still create problems on the webserver. If that happens, tell the webmaster what symbol caused it then avoid using that symbol until that's fixed too. For example a question mark or an asterisk and possibly other symbols may all cause trouble.

Q3) I tried to add an image but it didn't work. What happened?

A3) It could be one of several things. the most common are;

  • The image is too big - there's a limit of 500KB. Reduce the size of the image and try again, or
  • The image is not a JPEG. The only image type that's used on the site is a JPEG image. Change the image type and try again.

Q4) I don't know how to change the image size or the image type - how do I do that?

A4) OK, here are a few suggestions - but have another look at Question 1 first.

  • When you submit an image to the website, the size will be changed to fit within 640 by 480 pixels. If the width is larger than 640 OR the height is larger than 480, the size will be reduced until it fits within those limits. You can change the file size by reducing the size of the image or increasing the compression. NOTE: The image does not have to be 640 x 480. It can be 640 x 380 or 540 x 480 for example. To make that change you need a photoediting program. If you scanned your own image - use the program that came with the scanner. The size can normally be changed with one of the "Format" or "Edit" options.
  • The file type can normally be changed in the image editing program you used to scan and save the image. Look for the "Save As" option and for the file type to be jpg or jpeg. If you would like to be able to save a different file type - let the webmaster know.

Q5) I don't like the way my image looks on-screen and want to change it. How do I do that?

A5) Just delete the image, edit your copy of the image (or scan a new image), then add the image to your site. You can delete and add in the same session.

Q6) I added some images and it appeared to work OK but they don't all show up in the gallery although they do sometimes show up in the "featured artist".

A6) Congratulations! - You found a loophole. Have you submitted more images than you subscribed to display? If so, the gallery will only show a maximum of the number for which you paid, but the other images may still get shown on the "Featured Artist" page. (And, no there's little you can do to select which get shown and which don't, although if you figure it out let the webmaster know. Hint: you can use the "position" field)

When (and if) we get the U_do_it feature working the way it's supposed to, you will be limited to adding whatever maximum number of images you paid for but so far we're working on the honour system. If you want all your images to show up in your Gallery, just go to the admin page and delete the images you don't want to include - if there are just as many as you subscribed for, they'll all show up in the Gallery.

Q7) How do I change my bio page - I noticed that's a new button on the admin page?

A7) First get a copy of your existing bio (there's a link on the admin page that will take you to it), then edit it using your favourite editing program and save it on your own computer as an "html" file. Now you can add it to your website using the admin page (just like an image). Easy huh?

Q8) That all sounds too complicated. Can you do any of this for me?

A8) Yes we can! However, there may be a small fee for each image or for changing the bio.

Q9) What do I have to use to edit html pages?

A9) When you retrieve a copy of your bio on the admin page, it's not really a true html page. You can edit it in a program such as "word" or your favourite word processer as long as that program can save your changes as an "html" file. When you submit that page to the site, the new page will be used on your website instead of the older version of your bio. If you have an html editor - you can use that too. Just make sure the page you submit has been saved as an "html" file. Anything else will not work.

Q10) I don't see anything on this page that answers my question. What now?

A10) Congratulations! You have found a question that's not asked "frequently". Here's your opportunity to get a personalized reply and also get your question added to this FAQ. Just send an e-mail to the webmaster. If he can't answer your question, he'll find someone who can. If we think it's a good question (of course it is!), the question and the answer will get added to this FAQ. Who said fame was fleeting?
