Artist’s Vision

We have all experienced the pressures arising from the increasing complexity of our daily lives. For many years now, I have realized that for me, participation in various sports and outdoor leisure activities provides a welcome release, so I actively search out environments that excite, challenge and heal. My work is inspired by such experiences.

In some ways my work may be considered as “experiments with paint”, resulting from my aesthetic exploration of the essential life forces I find in nature… the smell of warm earth; the dynamic movements of vegetation and grass, dappled light and shade, the soft folds of a new blanket of snow…

Paintings are impressionistic interpretations – sometimes abstract – employing various techniques from thin, translucent washes to thick, rich impasto strokes often blended, sometimes crisp and geometric.

Aesthetic references to date include Canadians Bruno Coté, Gordon Harrison, Charles Spratt, the Group of Seven and the French Impressionists.

About the Artist

Gerry has been painting for the last fourteen years. For the previous three decades, his professional practice as a landscape architect and planner saw him design and construct a wide range of environments where people live, work and play. His formal education includes a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Guelph, and a Master of Arts (Geography and Environmental Studies), from Carleton University. He continues to work professionally.

Throughout his career, various mixed media were used in commercial graphic illustrations of design work for public and private sector clients. Only time was required to allow the development of a more personal fine art expression. Subsequent instruction was received at the Ottawa School of Art, the Nepean Visual Arts Centre, the Mississippi Mills School of the Arts and Wallack’s, with acrylics emerging as his preferred medium.

Having grown up in the agricultural countryside south of Ottawa, travels in North America, the Caribbean, Europe and Scandinavia provided wider inspiration for his work. Today, that same Ottawa Valley, the Madawaska Highlands the Gatineau Hills and continued travels offer a rich and varied palette for on-going visual and aesthetic explorations.

A member of the Nepean Fine Arts League, Gerry’s work is exhibited and displayed in both private and public collections, and in various galleries. Please contact him directly to view current works, to purchase originals or discuss commission paintings.
